Shelf Cooking in Shelftember
Shelf Cooking in Shelftember
I just finished doing a whole month of Shelf Cooking! We didn’t eat out, spend more than $25/week on groceries, and we cooked at home every night. I saw Jordan at Fun Cheap or Free post about it and since we have an overabundance of food storage, I thought it was an awesome idea.
When I brought it up with my husband, his response was, “Sure glad I’m out of town for 2 weeks this month”…
*What is shelf cooking? It’s a style of cooking that describes making meals starting FIRST with ingredients you have in your fridge, freezer, and pantry. You only buy ingredients from the store that are needed to supplement those meals – NOT the other way around.
*You have $25 per week for fresh groceries and everything else needs to come from your fridge, freezer, and pantry!
I took a rough inventory of what we had on hand. (I’m working on a pantry inventory list and will post that when it’s finished. I couldn’t find one that I liked, so I’m making my own.) Then I sat down and scheduled our meals on my phone. I set a reminder for what meat I needed to thaw each morning and what time I needed to start dinner.
There were days when I just wanted to head to Chili’s or Taco Amigo, but we persevered.
And we made it! We survived #Shelftember! And not only that, we are going to keep going into October. Much to my husband’s dismay…
