How to Clean Your Washing Machine

Oh my grossness. Have you ever cleaned your washing machine? Like really take it all apart and deep clean it?

And then we took it apart. And the grossness only got worse. It was nasty and coated with black stuff.

I had been reading tutorials on how to clean washing machines and decided I didn’t want to use bleach. I wanted to do it using more natural products. So I chose to use white vinegar and baking soda. Super simple.

First I (well my husband) took the agitator out of the machine and took it apart. Then I soaked it in the sink and used a toothbrush with baking soda on it to scrub the gunk off. Yuck! It took a lot of scrubbing.

Disclaimer – I’m not sure if the agitator can be taken out of all washing machines so make sure to confirm this before yanking it out.

Once I had cleaned the agitator and put it all back together, I filled the basin with hot water and added 3 cups of white vinegar and ½ cup of baking soda. Then let the machine run through an entire cycle.

When the cycle was done, I used a clean cloth to wipe down the inside of the basin. The vinegar and baking soda has loosened the ring of soap scum and it wiped right off.

Then I ran another cycle with just cold water, nothing else added, just to rinse it out.

This was the first time I had cleaned our washing machine, and boy was I surprised at the results!

Look how beautiful it is! Now if only it would stay that way…
